MongoDB and MySQL in Ruby and PHP

Some time ago, quite interested in developing for MongoDB and spent some benchmarks in comparison with MySQL.
Initially, only Ruby, but when the results astonished (the worse), then in PHP, for comparison.
Maybe it will save someone some time.

Baselines:
System: $ uname-a
Linux pavlin.ik 2.6.31-gentoo-r4 # 1 SMP Sun Nov 1 18:21:31 MSK 2009 i686 Intel ® Core (TM) 2 Duo CPU T5450@1.66GHz GenuineIntel GNU / Linux
MongoDB v. 1.0.1
Gems:
gem mongo (0.16)
gem mongo_ext (0.16)
gem mysql (2.8.1)
Ruby:
ruby 1.8.7 (2009-06-12 patchlevel 174) [i686-linux]
ruby 1.9.1p243 (2009-07-16 revision 24175) [i686-linux]
ruby-enterprise-1.8.7-2009.10
PHP 5.2.11-pl0-gentoo with Suhosin-Patch 0.9.7 (cli)
Source tests are here: http://github.com/latrommi/benchmarking

Actually, the results:

Only one conclusion: it does not mean that MongoDB worse than MySQL, it means that it is not written in a normal, fast driver for Ruby:)

P.S. would be cool if someone would hold similar tests for Python.

The first electromagnetic interstellar message

The first electromagnetic interstellar message was sent on Nov. 16, 1974 using the Arecibo radar telescope with an antenna diameter of 305 meters and the transmitter power of 500 kilowatts. Length communication was only 3 minutes. During this time, was transferred to 1679 bits of information. This number, being the product of two prime factors, indicates that the message encrypted two-dimensional image 23 by 73 pixels.

In 1679 bits Arecibo Frank Drake and Carl Sagan tried to put as much information.

The first block (red) defines the rules for writing numbers (from 1 to 10) in the binary system.

The second (orange) - lists the number of elements on which the life on Earth: hydrogen (1), carbon (6), nitrogen (7), oxygen (8) and phosphorus (15).

The third block (yellow) describes the structure of the DNA molecule: forming its skeleton deoxyribose (S5ON7) and phosphate (P04) alternate in the region are two columns, and in the middle gives the chemical formula of four nucleotides: adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine that encode genetic information. Formulas are written numerical coefficients in the same manner as the “elements of life” in the second block. For example, the deoxyribose is encoded as 7-5-0-1-0, which means 7 hydrogen atoms, 5 - carbon and 1 - oxygen.

The fourth block (green) - a DNA helix, and in the middle reports the number of nucleotides in human DNA - 4 294 441 822 (we now know that there are about S billion).

The fifth block (blue) contains information about people: from left to middle-sized man - 14 (1.76 m in units of the wavelength of the message - 12,6 cm), and the right - the world’s population in 1974 - 4 292 853 750.

Sixth block (blue) - the solar system from nine planets. The earth moved up and is under the man from the previous block, pointing to our habitat. Purple block represents a plate radar telescope that sent this message, and at the bottom of the center given its diameter - 2430 (306 meters in units of wavelength).

Frank Drake in the sample showed a simplified prototype of this message to other scientists. Carl Sagan decrypt it almost completely. On the other successes of reliable information is not preserved.

Asterisk

Released new versions (via yoyo.pl) of all supported branches of Asterisk - 1.2.35, 1.4.26.2, 1.6.0.15, 1.6.1.6. Update unscheduled, associated with the vulnerability in the implementation of the protocol IAX2 (module chan_iax2), giving a remote attacker to cause a crash or Asterisk at the best of circumstances to initiate a session without passing the authentication. According to the report for the correction of vulnerability, the problem has been known since June 22 last year and the network can find a working exploit. Such a long time to fix due to the deadlock has arisen regarding the need to change the protocol and violations of backward compatibility for the vulnerability. Luckily found a workaround solution.

You can also note the emergence of a new project Starfish PBX (via bild.de ), aimed at creating an open alternative to commercial product Switchvox, growing company Digium. Currently Starfish PBX at the stage of preliminary testing, the product is not tied in some specific hardware devices, and aims to support a wide range of equipment and VoIP protocols (IAX, MGCP), focusing not only on the SIP. Available for download binary packages for Ubuntu 9.04 and a full set of source code, licensed under the Telesoft Public Licence 1.0, providing a similar degree of freedom of GPL, but imposing some restrictions on the supply of software in the hardware devices.
